Volleyball Falls to Saint Mary's, 3-1

CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team fell to Saint Mary's in four sets Saturday afternoon in the America First Event Center by scores of 17-25, 17-25, 25-23, 16-25. The Blue Raiders fall to 6-0 on the season, while the Gaels improve to 2-4.
Senior Bri Tankesley led the team in digs with a total 12 digs on the match. Dora Peonia and Mikaela Weidmann both finished with nine kills and Taylor Hammill recorded 31 assists, her second-highest on the season.

The Gaels scored first in the first set and got to a 2-0 lead before back-to-back kills from Weidmann and Samira Lawson Body tied it up. Saint Mary's went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-3 lead, and continued to a 16-8 lead. The Blue Raiders then had an amazing 8-0 run that included kills from Peonia and Lawson Body, a Peonia service ace and two blocks to tie it up, 16-16. The Gaels fought back with a block to take back the lead and eventually clenched the set, 25-17.
In set two, Saint Mary's kept the lead throughout the set, taking the first point with a kill. Amalie Jorgensen had two strong attacks to help keep the Blue Raiders close at the beginning, but the Gaels created a bigger lead and claimed the set, 25-17.
The Blue Raiders brought the heat in set three, taking a 2-1 lead early on with an Urte Neimantaite kill and a Marley Banton ace. Saint Mary's took back the lead and kept it until an error tied it up 10-10. The Blue Raiders capitalized on the opportunity and took back the lead with an attacking error by the Gaels. Middle Tennessee kept the lead the rest of the set, which ended with a kill by Amalie Jergensen, 25-23.
Saint Mary's scored first again in the fourth set, jumping to a 2-0 lead, but a kill by Mikaela Weidmann ended the run. The Gaels went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-11 lead, and despite the fight the Blue Raiders' showed, Saint Mary's claimed set four, 25-16, and the match.

The Blue Raiders travel to Evansville, Indiana next weekend for the Dunn Hospitality Tournament at the University of Evansville. The match on Friday is at 3:30 p.m. against Eastern Illinois. There are two matches on Saturday against host Evansville at 12:30 p.m. and Purdue Fort Wayne at 3:30 p.m.
