Savage, Sutton enjoy career efforts
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Anastasia Hayes turned in a historic performance to lead Middle Tennessee to a 75-55 win at Marshall Thursday.
Hayes delivered just the second triple-double in program history and the first by a guard to highlight an exceptional all-around performance and bring Head Coach Rick Insell his 350th career win in just his 476th game leading the program.
Hayes was dynamic from the opening tip and finished with 17 points and career highs for rebounds (11) and assists (10). Hayes is the first Lady Raider to achieve the feat since Cheyenne Parker against UTEP Jan. 17, 2015.
"I had no idea," an elated Hayes said after the game. "I knew we were playing well as a team and hitting a lot of shots. I feel like we were sharing the ball well and going to the boards strong. The biggest thing is that we picked up a big conference road win."
Insell said a triple-double is always special but sometimes even more difficult for a guard.
"What a special achievement," Insell said. "It's very difficult to get a triple-double as you can tell by how few times it has been accomplished. You have to be strong in several different areas and Anastasia was tonight. She did a good job finding her teammates in good shooting position and they did a great job knocking down those shots."
Middle Tennessee (10-5, 2-1) put on a shooting clinic at Marshall and knocked down 12 3-pointers to tie its season high for treys. The Lady Raiders shot 42 percent (25-of-60) from the field, including 38 percent (12-of-32) from 3-point range. Middle Tennessee had a season-high 20 assists on 25 field goals.
While Hayes turned in a historic performance it was a solid all-around team win for the Lady Raiders, who secured their 131st road win under Insell.
Charity Savage turned in a career-best performance to lead four Lady Raiders in double figures. Savage registered her sixth career-double with a near-perfect performance. Savage scored a career-high 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. The four 3s were a career high and she pulled 10 rebounds.
Taylor Sutton also set career highs as she poured in 14 points on the strength of four 3-pointers. Sutton's eight rebounds were a career high and her four assists were just one shy of her career high. Aislynn Hayes turned in another solid performance as the freshman delivered 15 points to go with two rebounds, two assists and no turnovers in 31 minutes.
"I'm so proud of this team," Insell said. "It was a solid road win against a Marshall team that you have to play well to beat. I thought we were locked in from the get-go and very focused in our approach. It is a good way to start a tough conference road swing."
The Lady Raiders started strong with a 23-point first quarter to open an 11-point lead after the first 10 minutes. They stretched the advantage to 44-29 at the half and never looked back on their way to victory.
The Lady Raiders ripped down 45 rebounds which ties their third highest total of the season.
Middle Tennessee will look to complete the road sweep when it plays at rival WKU Saturday. Tipoff in Bowling Green, Ky., is 2 p.m.
