COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – An opening round score of 4-under par 284 has Middle Tennessee in the hunt for a championship thru 18 of 36 holes at the seventh annual Intercollegiate at The Grove.
"I was happy we finally got off to a good start," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "The Grove has always been a very difficult golf course for us to get started on, maybe because we put too much pressure on ourselves playing at home, but I'm really happy with the performance from the guys today and I'm excited to see what happens tomorrow."
Four Blue Raiders logged under par rounds on Monday to land inside the Top 10 while Head Coach Mark McEntire's squad shares the lead in the 13-team field alongside Coastal Carolina.
"It was good to see some rounds in the red and some pretty consistent numbers throughout the team," McEntire added. "I like that competition we have within the team and I hope that will give us an advantage as we look to win the golf tournament tomorrow."
Blue Raider sophomore Michael Barnard closed out his round in style, carding his second eagle of the day on the Par 5 18th hole to log a 3-under par 69 that has him in a tie for fourth and just one stroke back of the individual lead.
"I think the world of Michael Barnard," McEntire exclaimed. "He's been through a couple of things that made him grow up probably a little bit faster than he wanted to, but he's definitely a team leader and a team guy and somebody who deserves some good things to come his way. I'm glad that it's happening and I wouldn't be surprised if he comes out and shoots another really good round tomorrow."
Senior Tanner Owens posted a 2-under par 70 in the opening round of his final go-around at The Intercollegiate at The Grove, negating a rocky start with five birdies in his last 15 holes of the day.
Graduate transfer Connor McKay and sophomore Josh Morris joined Barnard and McKay in the under par club with a pair of scorecards at 1-under par 71 to finish the day in a tie for 10th place.
Gavin Clements, Owen Stamper and Steven Haremski all posted rounds of 2-over par 74 on the day with Daniel Love right behind them at 3-over par 75.
Palmer Sadlowski's 5-over par 77 and Cooper Sears' 11-over par 83 rounded out the scoring for Middle Tennessee in Monday's opening round.
"We had a good team day today," Barnard stated. "We got really good rounds out of Tanner and Connor today and Palmer stuck in there real strong today after a tough start. As long as we keep our heads down and keep playing like we know we can we'll have a real good shot at the team title tomorrow which I'm real excited about."
Tuesday's final round will begin at 9:00 a.m. with tee times off holes 1 and 10. Live scoring can be followed at Golfstat.com.
