HOUSTON, Texas – Middle Tennessee Men's Golf opened its 2020 spring slate on Sunday with a round of 10-over par 298 putting them in a tie for 10th place at the All-American Intercollegiate.
The Blue Raiders were fairly solid throughout the day despite not having much opportunity to practice leading up to their spring opener, and are within four strokes of No. 32 Houston and just six strokes back of No. 30 South Carolina.
Lone senior Tanner Owens was strong and consistent throughout the day, stringing together 13 consecutive pars to start the day before carding a birdie on 14 and a bogey on 16 to finish the day even par and tied for 23rd individually.
Junior Ilari Saulo and sophomore Palmer Sadlowski each turned in rounds of 3-over par 75 on Sunday, the former of which collected three birdies but finished the day with an untimely double bogey.
Junior Cooper Sears, playing for the first time in 2019-20, and freshman Steven Haremski, competing as an individual, both shot 4-over par in round one with Sears turning in a team-high four birdies on his scorecard.
Rookie Mattias Varjun rounded out the Blue Raider scoring on day one with a 6-over par 78.
"I didn't really know what to expect going into the day because we just were not able to prepare as much as I would have liked heading into the tournament due to the weather," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "We got a really solid round from Tanner, though, and I like the fact that Cooper made a bunch of birdies and know that Ilari and Mattias will play better the next two days.
"All in all we were able to knock some of the rust off and we'll look to improve every day. This is a very good golf course and with a good round tomorrow we can make a move up the board."
Middle Tennessee begins round two on Monday at 8:00 a.m. as Varjun tees off alongside golfers from UT Arlington and Lamar.
