HOUSTON, Texas – Head Men's Golf Coach Mark McEntire willed his team to finish on a positive note Tuesday at the All-American Intercollegiate, logging their best round of the week at 4-over par 292 in the tournament's final round to finish in 12th place at 28-over (298-302-292=892).
"Obviously this was not the week that we hoped to have to start the spring season," McEntire said. "This was a tough golf course and great test of golf. You have to have all aspects of game working to play well on a course like this."
After totaling just 17 birdies as a team thru the first 36 holes at Golf Club of Houston, the Blue Raiders collected 15 birdies on Tuesday with three each coming from Tanner Owens, Palmer Sadlowski, Mattias Varjun and Steven Haremski.
"I am much more pleased with the round today," McEntire added. "It is nice to see some red numbers from Palmer and Tanner and Mattias played a nice final 36 holes. We will need Ilari to return to form but with him playing well I feel like we can compete very well in our league."
For the 10th time in 17 tournaments since the beginning of his junior campaign, Owens logged a Top 20 finish as birdies on his final two holes gave him a 1-under par score for the round and the week and moved him into a tie for 19th place.
The Milton, Tenn., native led the entire field with 41 pars on the week and was tops on the team in birdies (7), Par 4 scoring (+1) and Par 5 scoring (-2).
Sadlowski matched Owens with an impressive round of 1-under par 71 on Tuesday finishing with two birdies in his final three holes to claim the second best 54-hole total by a Blue Raider at 7-over par.
Varjun, the lone rookie in McEntire's lineup, completed the tournament one stroke back of Sadlowski at 8-over par for the week after his second consecutive round of 1-over par 73.
Haremski, playing in Houston as an individual, finished at 18-over par for the week while juniors Cooper Sears and Ilari Saulo were 19-over par and 20-over par, respectively thru 54 holes.
The Blue Raiders now have a long break between tournaments with hopes of better weather and more practice rounds in the future as they begin preparation for the Schenkel Invitational.
"We're looking forward to getting a lot more reps in at home over the next few weeks before we get back in action at the Schenkel, where we hope to be able to put together a better showing," McEntire said.
Middle Tennessee tees off in the three-day Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., on Friday, March 13.
