YOUNGSVILLE, La. — Middle Tennessee rebounded in a huge way on Saturday, as freshman Kaylee Richetto led the way with a 5-for-6 day at the plate to Blue Raider wins over Northwestern State and Nicholls State.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 2, NORTHWESTERN STATE 1
» Much like MT, Northwestern State entered the season with a preseason sixth place prediction in its conference.
» Despite the 6-4 record they entered play with on Saturday, the Lady Demons have proven to be a solid team, scoring a program record 23 runs in a game earlier this season and playing a Houston team that was receiving votes tough on the road.
» MT started the game with two-out singles by freshmen Kelci Hill and Kaylee Richetto in the first two innings, but the Blue Raiders ended a 21-inning scoreless stretch with two runs in the third inning.
» Keely McGee and Summer Burgess led off with consecutive singles and were moved over by Sydney Heath's sacrifice bunt. Hill then recorded her second hit of the game to score McGee and Burgess.
» Northwestern State got a run back in the fifth inning despite only getting one base hit in the inning.
» After a quick sixth inning, the Demons had the go-ahead runner at the plate, but Mia Marinakis got the final batter to fly out to right field to record her first career save as a Blue Raider.
» For her efforts in the circle - 5.0 innings, four hits and three strikeouts - Kailey Ahlstrom earned the win and moved to 2-2 on the season.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 9, NICHOLLS STATE 4
» Nicholls State fell to 5-10 overall and 0-2 against Middle Tennessee on the year after Saturday's loss.
» Richetto opened the scoring with a two-run homer that scored Lexi Cushing in the second inning.
» Jocelynn De La Cruz then slugged her fifth homer of the 2020 campaign, and it was a three-run shot that scored Burgess and Heath.
» After the Colonels answered with one run in their half of the third, the score stood at 5-1 through the fifth inning.
» Four different Blue Raiders recorded RBIs in the top of the sixth as MT made it a 9-1 game.
» Nicholls State kept the game going with three runs in the sixth, but Amber Baldwin finished off the complete game for her third win of the season.
QUOTES FROM THE BLUE RAIDERS
» Head Coach Jeff Breeden on the bounce back wins on Saturday: "I thought we pitched well. We played good defense all day, and our pitchers had good outings. We did just enough earlier today, and tonight I thought we hit the ball hard."
» Breeden on the hot-hitting freshmen: "We've got some diamonds in [Kaylee] Richetto and Kelci Hill. They're two freshmen that are stepping up and keep hitting. I'm pleased with what a lot of our folks are doing, but those two in particular are doing a good job."
» Designated player Kaylee Richetto on being led by this year's senior class: "They really are role models to me. They always have high energy and good positivity, and that really makes me relaxed and confident in myself to do a good job."
» Richetto on what the approach has been at the plate lately: "Our energy on the the team has really helped me out. As a freshman, I'm just trying to get in and do my job when I have the opportunity. The team being so positive is really helping me."
