FULLERTON, Calif. — On the second day of the 2020 season, Middle Tennessee softball bounced back from an opening night loss with a pair of wins, and head coach Jeff Breeden earned career wins No. 150 and 151.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 7, UC RIVERSIDE 5
» UC Riverside got on the board first with a first-inning double to centerfield.
» MT responded in the next half inning, as Lani Rodriguez drew a walk with the bases loaded.
» The Highlanders applied pressure and took back the lead with a three-run third inning.
» MT made UC Riverside pay for a two-out error, scoring five runs in the fourth to take a lead, which the Blue Raiders kept for the remainder of the game.
» All but one Blue Raider in the starting lineup tallied a hit.
» Kailey Ahlstrom bounced back from getting the loss last night to earn a win over the Highlanders. Amber Baldwin faced only one batter in the seventh and earned her first career save.
» Kaylee Richetto made her Blue Raider debut with a sacrifice hit and a groundout.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 9, UTAH STATE 4
» For the third time this season already, MT's opponent scored first on a first-inning fielder's choice.
» Then, to lead off the second inning, Lexi Cushing slugged her 35th career home run to knot the game at one run apiece.
» MT then tacked on two more runs when Claire Smith and Lani Rodriguez delivered with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.
» After the Aggies tied the game up at four runs apiece in the sixth, the Blue Raiders answered with five runs in the seventh, including a two-run homer by Ryan King.
» Amber Baldwin finished a complete game and earned her first win of the season.
QUOTES FROM THE BLUE RAIDERS
» Head Coach Jeff Breeden on reaching 150 career wins at MT: "It's a good milestone. I need to give credit to our administration for sticking with me. I appreciate them for having the confidence in me to keep doing what I love. It's a great place to work, and I love our team. It's a tribute to all the girls that have been here, and hopefully 250 comes a lot sooner than 150 did."
» Coach Breeden on Baldwin's performance in the circle on Friday: "Her problem last night was that she was in her head a little too much with the illegal pitches, but today she fixed it. I thought everybody that pitched today answered the bell and pitched well."
» Pitcher Amber Baldwin on her approach to picking up the save against UC Riverside: "Going into that, I knew I had just one job: to get the out. I was just trying to help our team get out of that game so we could move on to the next game."
» Baldwin on playing in front of friends and family: "It means a lot to me, especially because it's my first weekend coming back from injury."
