MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – On the heels of the most explosive games in Conference USA this season, Anastasia Hayes has been named College Sports Madness National High-Major Player of the Week.
Hayes turned in her third career double-double with a career-high 37 points and 11 rebounds to lead Middle Tennessee to a 108-103 double-overtime win against rival WKU Saturday. Hayes just missed a triple-double for the second straight game, finishing with eight assists.
The 37 points are the second-most in a single game in Conference USA this season and the most against a league foe.
"That was one of the most amazing games I've been involved with," Hayes said. "Everyone was into the game and there was a lot on the line, plus they are our big rival. Everything everyone did mattered in us winning the game. I was just glad to be part of it because people will be talking about that game years from now."
They likely will be talking about Hayes' performance, too.
The redshirt sophomore was 15-of-19 from the free-throw line, including 8-of-10 in the two overtime periods. The 15 free throws tied for the fourth most in program history.
Hayes came up big in the clutch with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists in the overtime periods, while playing 48:46 of the 50-minute game.
"Anastasia has had several big-time games this season but Saturday night was one of those special games," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "She made a ton of big plays, winning plays, against a really good team. She impacted the game in so many different ways. It was a great performance in a big game, which makes it even more memorable."
Hayes has scored 20-plus points in seven games this season, including two contests with 30-plus points.
