Senior averaged 20 points, 19 rebounds in two wins
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – What a week it was for Charity Savage.
The senior forward turned in two double-doubles and one of the top games in the nation this season in regard to rebounding on her way to averaging 20 points and 19 rebounds in two Lady Raider wins.
Savage's heroics were rewarded when she was named Conference USA Player of the Week for the second time this season Sunday.
With Savage turning in career-best performances, Middle Tennessee (21-9) earned wins against North Texas and Charlotte to clinch a first-round bye in this week's C-USA Championship in Frisco, Texas.
"Charity has had a remarkable season and she deserves every good thing that has come her way," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "She has put in the work and she has certainly paid her dues. Charity has come up big for us all season, but she had two memorable games to close the regular season."
It was a week in which Savage set career highs for points (27), rebounds (25) and field goals made (10) in helping the Lady Raiders register two wins.
Savage recorded double-doubles in both games, giving her 12 for the season. She also moved into fifth on the Lady Raider single-season rebounding list with 339.
The Memphis, Tenn., native started the week with a whopping 25-rebound performance against North Texas on senior night, also adding 13 points.
The 25 rebounds were the most ever in a C-USA game, third-most in C-USA history for overall games; second most in NCAA Division I women's basketball and the most against a Division I foe this season; and tied for the second-most in Lady Raider single-game history.
It would be hard to imagine Savage topping that performance, but she did at Charlotte in a must-win game in order to secure a first-round bye in the conference tournament.
Savage poured in a career-high 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her 12th career double-double in the comeback win.
More incredible was the manner in which Savage exploded in a remarkable second-half effort. Savage was 7-of-11 from the field with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the second half alone. She was 4-of-5 from the field, scoring 13 points and grabbing five rebounds in the fourth quarter.
Savage was also clutch under pressure, calmly sinking four straight field goals in the final 15 seconds as Middle Tennessee rallied from eight down with 1:08 remaining.
"That was a great game and great win to be part of," Savage said. "We were down 11 at the half but our determination was to come out in the third quarter and try to cut into the lead and give ourselves a chance in the fourth quarter. It didn't look good for awhile but we never quit."
Savage now has double-figure rebounds in 21 games this season, including 13-plus in 12. She ranks sixth nationally for total rebounds (339), seventh for offensive rebounds per game (4.4), 12th for rebounds per game (11.3), 30th for defensive rebounds per game (6.9) and 40th for double-doubles with 12.
Middle Tennessee will begin tournament play against the winner of UAB and LA Tech Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the Ford Center at The Star.
