MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Anastasia Hayes and Charity Savage were mainstays during Middle Tennessee's 21-win regular season.
The dynamic duo was rewarded for their exceptional season by being named to All-Conference USA teams Monday.
Aislynn Hayes earned a spot on the five-member C-USA All-Freshman team after her dynamic rookie campaign.
"All three of those young ladies earned their spot on those teams," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "It is tough to make all-conference teams so this is quite an honor for them, especially considering how good our conference is this year. You have six teams with 20 or more wins for the first time in a long time so that tells you there is outstanding talent in the league.
"There were also more freshmen making an impact on their team this year than in years past so with only five spots available on the all-freshman squad the competition is pretty tight."
Anastasia Hayes made an immediate impact for the Lady Raiders and in C-USA, scoring double figures in 28 of 29 games, including 20-plus points in 10 contests. She enters the C-USA Championship with four straight games of 24-plus points.
The dynamic Anastasia Hayes is among the NCAA Top 50 in five categories: free throw attempts (fourth, 221); free throws made (26th, 138), minutes played (22nd, 37.1), scoring (32nd, 18.7) and field goals made (49th, 194). She is also 85th nationally for assists per game (4.4).
Anastasia Hayes is in the Top 4 of four C-USA statistical categories, including minutes (first, 37.1), scoring (second, 18.7), assists (fourth, 4.4) and steals (fourth, 1.9). She is also ninth for assist-turnover ratio with a 1.0 mark.
"I'm honored to be named to the all-conference team," Anastasia Hayes said. "I really didn't know what to expect this season after sitting out last season. Watching the teams play while I was out, I knew there were a lot of good teams and the conference is very competitive."
Savage's breakout season saw her go from a seldom-used player to earning a spot on the all-conference team. The Memphis, Tenn., native was one of three players in C-USA to average a double-double with 10.9 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
Savage is sixth nationally for total rebounds (339), seventh for offensive rebounds per game (4.4), 12th for rebounds per game (1.3), 30th for defensive rebounds per game (6.9) and 40th for double-doubles with 12.
The tenacious rebounder had double-figure caroms in 21 games including a whopping 13-plus in 12. She is currently fifth on the Lady Raider single-season rebounds list with 339.
Her 12 double-doubles are third most in C-USA this season.
"It's been a memorable year, one I will never forget," Savage said. "The biggest thing is I'm glad that I've been able to contribute to our team's outstanding season. We aren't finished. It means a lot to be recognized on the all-conference teams because that says the coaches and voters took note of what we were able to accomplish."
Aislynn Hayes' freshman campaign was one of the best in Conference USA history and one of the tops in the nation this season.
Aislynn Hayes was a seven-time C-USA Freshman of the Week honoree, second most in conference history. She was also a three-time recipient of the United States Basketball Writers Association National Freshman of the Week honor – most ever by a single player in the association's history.
Aislynn Hayes is the highest-scoring freshman in the conference with 14.1 points per game, which is good for 10th overall in the league scoring race. She has scored in every game of her collegiate career, including 23 with double figures, while manning the point guard position for the Lady Raiders.
Aislynn Hayes enters the C-USA Championship having score double figures in 10 straight games.
"I am blessed to make the all-freshman team," Aislynn Hayes said. "I didn't know what to expect coming into my first year of Division I basketball. It's been a transition, for sure, but I am happy that I have been able to make a positive impact."
The C-USA Newcomer of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Player of the Year will be announced Tuesday.
