Raiders eyeing C-USA title defense in late April
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After a shortened fall schedule in the first half of the 2020-21 season, the Blue Raider Men's Golf program is ready to roll this spring with six tournaments slated for the next three months leading up to the postseason.
Middle Tennessee will be looking to pick up right where it left off after closing the fall out with a team title in its home tournament, the Intercollegiate at The Grove.
"We're really excited to start the spring season and get these guys back in action," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "Our victory at The Grove seems like an eternity ago, so we can't wait to get back on the course and try to keep that momentum going."
"Over the break we were able to get Kevin Jegers here, and we hope to see him give us some depth, push our other players to get better and possibly get into the lineup for us," McEntire added. "We also plan to open our new facility the first week of March, so there is a lot of exciting things going on for the Blue Raiders right now and we look forward to seeing where it leads us this spring."
McEntire and his squad open up in just nine days' time when they travel to Florence, S.C., for the Raines Company Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion at the Country Club of South Carolina on Feb. 6-7.
MT heads south to Palm Beach, Fla., on the first two days of March to compete in the Southern Invitational at The Falls Club.
Back-to-back trips to Georgia follow as the Raiders play in the Linger Longer Invitational at the Golf Course at Great Waters on March 12-14 and the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club on March 19-21.
April opens with the Blue Raiders partaking in the Irish Creek Intercollegiate, a tournament hosted by Conference USA rival Charlotte at the Golf Club at Irish Creek on April 2-3.
Middle Tennessee returns home to close out the regular season in Murfreesboro, hosting the first ever Blue Raider Classic at Stones River Country Club on April 12-13.
When the Raiders return to the Conference USA Championship on April 26-29 they'll be looking to defend their 2019 title after last year's championship was canceled. MT has won each of the last two trophies at Texarkana Country Club, also taking the C-USA Championship in 2018.
"With the uncertainty of how teams will qualify for the postseason this year, we're going to put a lot of our time and effort towards winning another Conference USA championship to ensure our season continues beyond that," McEntire explained. "We have put a schedule in place with golf courses that will be very similar to Texarkana Country Club to help us be as prepared as possible for that week."
Six NCAA Regionals will be played on May 16-19 at sites hosted by New Mexico, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma State, Washington, Ball State and Florida State.
The 2021 NCAA Division I National Championship is set for May 28-June 2 and will be hosted at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
