TULSA, Okla. – The Blue Raiders competed in the ITA All-American Championships on Monday hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Chris Edge, Pavel Motl, Stijn Slump, and Francisco Rocha represented the Blue Raiders.
In the qualifying singles round, MT made some noise with two huge victories. Slump stayed hot with a win over Stanford's Timothy Sah, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Edge got back on track with an upset against nationally-ranked Florida Gulf Coast's Magnus Johnson in straight sets. Both are on to the Round of 64 in the qualifying bracket tomorrow. Motl fell in his match respectively and will play a consolation match.
In doubles play, Edge and Rocha started in the qualifying round of the tournament. They squared off with Virginia's nationally-ranked (No. 39) duo of Goetz/Rodesch. MT's pair fell in a closely contested match, 2-6, 6-4, 12-10.
The tandem of Motl and Slump possess the No. 21 ranking after an outstanding campaign last season. They will play together in Tulsa, earning a main draw spot in doubles on Wednesday.
Head Coach Jimmy Borendame is making history with his 2021 squad. This is the first time in Borendame's head coaching career that he will have student-athletes make their ITA All-American starts in the main draw portion of the bracket on Wednesday.
ASSISTANT TENNIS COACH ANDREA CALIGIANA
"We had a good first day overall. The guys competed really well and they also had a good attitude doing it. I liked the way they stuck to their own game even when it got tough for them out there. I'm happy for Edge, he picked up a great win in a big moment for us. In doubles, we played well but just fell short. We had it at match point but it just didn't go our way. Looking forward to watching our guys again tomorrow!"
