MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Blue Raiders doubles duo Pavel Motl and Stijn Slump will compete at the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Fall Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, California on Thursday, November 4 through 7.
The 2021 ITA National Fall Championships marks the third time over the past four seasons that the Blue Raiders had a qualifier for the fall championships. Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore qualified for the 2018 singles main draw, Motl and Slump qualified for the doubles main draw during the 2019 season, as well as being selected for the 2021 championships.
Motl and Slump opened the fall at the ITA Regional Championships, advancing all the way to the semifinals with wins over Castro and Luis of Belmont and Ball State's C. Adams and D. Kovacevic, before falling slight short against Kentucky's Lapadat and Mercer. The duo earned their best win of the year at the ITA All-Americans, earning a top-10 win over No. 9 G. Johns and S. Sculley of Duke, before falling in the round of 16 against USC's B. Frye and S. Dostanic. At their last invitational, Motl and Slump came up short in a hard-fought battle against Tennessee's Huds and Mitsui during the Illini Invite.
The duo will kick things off on Thursday, Nov. 4 in the round of 32, followed by the main draw and consolation rounds of 16 on Friday, Nov. 5. The main draw and quarterfinals will be on Saturday, Nov. 6, before closing things out on Sunday, Nov. 7 with the main draw and consolation finals.
HEAD COACH JIMMY BORENDAME
"Making the Fall Nationals three years in a row is impressive. Pavel and Stijn have really come a long way since their freshmen year. They actually lost 6-0 the first time they played together versus William & Mary and I told them they would never play together again. Boy, was I wrong. They are a very difficult team to play and I'm excited for this opportunity in San Diego for them to get some wins."
