MURRAY, Ky. — Despite losing the doubles point and having to come from behind, Middle Tennessee (4-5) showed its strength in singles action and clinched back-to-back wins for the first time in the 2021 season.
Murray State (1-3) got off to a hot start by winning a tightly-contested match at No. 3, 6-4. The Racers then clinched the first point of the match with a 6-3 victory on court one. Zani Barnard and Love-Star Alexis were leading 5-4 at No. 2 but were unable to complete the match.
Zani cruised through singles play and was first to finish with a score of 6-1, 6-2 on court three to tie the match at one point apiece.
The match didn't stay tied for long, as Murray State won 6-2, 6-2 on court four immediately following Barnard's win.
MT won back some momentum though, as Lidia Burrows fought to a 6-1, 7-5 finish at No. 2 to knot the match back up at 2-2.
One day after clinching MT's third win of the season with a three-set match, Lee Barnard came through in the clutch again for her team. Lee came back from down 1-4 in the third set to win in a thrilling tiebreak, with her final score reading 0-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
After cruising to a 6-2 first set win, Alexis found herself behind for most of the second set before taking the lead late in the set and keeping it to clinch win No. 4 in 2021 for Middle Tennessee.
Lilly-Sophie Schmidt added a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6 to finalize the 5-2 score.
The Blue Raiders will return to Murfreesboro and host Austin Peay and Xavier at the Adams Tennis Complex on Saturday, Feb. 27.
