MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raider women's tennis team hosted a doubleheader on Saturday at the Adam's Tennis Complex. It was a bittersweet day for Middle Tennessee, as they would win their early match against Austin Peay 4-2 but drop the afternoon contest 2-5 against a hot-handed Xavier squad.
Things got off to a rocky start early on in the first match for the Blue Raiders, seeing the doubles pair of Lee Barnard and Lidia Burrows squander an early 4-0 lead. However, it would take much more than a bad set to put away the Lady Raiders.
Sophomore Love-Star Alexis would put on a clinic in her singles match, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Middle Tennessee would go onto dominate in the rest of their singles matches, winning in straight sets on three out of five of the remaining courts.
After a short break during the afternoon, the Blue Raiders would take the court once more to face the Musketeers of Xavier. It was another tough start for the Lady Raiders, as they would fall behind 1-0 early after failing to secure the doubles point. It would only get more difficult to come back as the match wore on.
There were only two players for Middle Tennessee to come out on top of the match's singles portion. Love-Star continued her impressive run, putting away her opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Noelle Mauro would earn the other Blue Raider victory after a thrilling third set tie-break to give her the victory 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4).
The Lady Raiders will be back at Adam's Tennis Complex next weekend, as they are set to open up Conference USA play. Louisiana Tech will be in town next Saturday for a match-up at 3:00, followed by Southern Miss, who will take on Middle Tennessee on Sunday at 11:00.
