Blue Raiders Take Down Lions in Four Sets

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee women's volleyball team defeated the North Alabama Lions in four sets Thursday evening at Alumni Memorial Gym (15-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19).
The Blue Raiders put three players in double-digit kills, led by a season-high 15 from junior Emma Grever, who hit .225 in the match. Dasia Smith and Amelia Van Der Werff tallied 10 kills each.
Defensively, sophomore libero Marley Banton led the charge with 21 digs. Taylor Eisert recorded nine digs along with 45 assists. Amelia Van Der Werff tallied a career-high four blocks, while Kayla Henley and Dasia Smith added four blocks.
North Alabama jumped out to an early lead and continually building on it in the opening stanza. Up 17-7, a 7-2 run later helped the Lions to a 25-15 win in the first set.
The second set was the closest of the match as it featured 10 ties, and the lead changed four times. Early in the set, both teams traded points, unable to establish a sizable lead. Down 10-6, a strong 5-0 run would give the Blue Raiders an 11-10 lead. North Alabama would later respond and tie the set at 18. Up 22-20, Middle Tennessee would reel off four straight points to clinch the set and tie the match.
In the third set, with the score tied at four, Middle Tennessee used an 8-2 run to push their lead to 12-6. North Alabama would soon claw back, trimming the deficit to 18-16. The Blue Raiders would use two Emma Grever kills and two aces by Kayla Henley to take the set 25-18.
North Alabama would jump out to a 10-5 run in the fourth set. Behind the serve of Megan Turner, the Blue Raiders would pick up four straight points to tie the set at 15. The Lions would retake the lead at the 19-18 mark but a 7-0 run by Middle Tennessee would wrap up the set 25-19 and the match in four.
Up next, Middle Tennessee travels to Miami to face the FIU Panthers Sunday at Ocean Bank Convocation Center. The first serve is set for 12 p.m. CT.
