Blue Raiders Defeat FIU, Earns First Sweep of the Season

MIAMI, Fla. - The Middle Tennessee volleyball team defeated FIU in straight sets (25-18, 26-24, 25-15) Sunday at Ocean Bank Convocation Center, earning its first sweep of the season.
Junior Emma Grever led the charge for Middle Tennessee offensively, recording 10 kills with a .381 hitting percentage. It is the third time this season and her second straight match that she has collected double-digit kills. Samira Lawson Body also added 10 kills.
Setter Taylor Eisert collected 32 assists, nine digs, and two kills in the winning effort. Defensively, Marley Banton put up 13 digs while also recording four service aces. Amelia Van Der Werff earned a career-high five blocks in the match.
Middle Tennessee came out strong in the opening set, leading FIU 8-3 early. The Panthers tied the set, 11-11, but the Blue Raiders would use a 9-1 run to push their lead to eight, 20-12. Middle Tennessee continued a strong offensive attack in the opening set en route to a 25-18 set one win.
With Middle Tennessee ahead by three in the second set, 8-5, FIU won four-straight points to take a 9-8 lead. Tied at 17, the Blue Raiders won three-straight points to take a three-point lead and force a timeout from the opposing bench, 20-17. The set would go to three set points, but Middle Tennessee would ultimately win the set 26-24, widening its lead in the match to 2-0.
After FIU won the first point of the third set, Middle Tennessee won eight out of the next 10 points to take an early 8-3 lead. The Blue Raiders continued to dominate offensively as they pushed their lead to 17-9. A kill and an attack error sealed the sweep, 25-15.
Middle Tennessee will look to complete the series sweep tomorrow at 12 pm CT against FIU.
