STATESBORO, Ga. – Middle Tennessee struggled through the final day at The Schenkel Invitational, posting a 16-over par 304 to drop into a tie for seventh place in the field of 13 teams at 22-over par (287-295-304=886).
Despite the disappointing finish, the Blue Raiders nearly matched the final score of No. 38 ranked Kentucky (+20) and edged out one of two in-state foes in the field in Memphis (+26).
"I'm disappointed that we could not put up a better fight today," Head Coach Mark McEntire stated. "The conditions were tough and we just needed to find a way to make par to have a good day."
True freshman Kevin Jegers was able to navigate Forest Heights with an even par 72 on Sunday to claim the top finish among Blue Raiders, sharing 15th place in the field of 80 golfers at 2-over par (71-75-72=218).
Connor McKay's incredible streak of 11 straight rounds under par final came to an end in the final round of The Schenkel, where he tied for 29th at 6-over par (70-70-82=222) after a challenging finish to round three.
Michael Barnard finished two strokes back of McKay and tied for 40th at 8-over par, while Tanner Owens (+11) and Owen Stamper (+21) saw their fair share of struggles and will look to help the Blue Raiders bounce back next time out.
"Our three, four and five guys have really hurt us the last two weeks," McEntire added. "We must continue to work hard, especially in improving our short games, to give ourselves a better chance at winning conference."
Middle Tennessee competes again in 12 days, when the Irish Creek Intercollegiate (Apr. 2-3) hosted by Charlotte tees off in Kannapolis, N.C.
