Early Onslaught Leads Blue Raiders Over FIU
3/26/2021 8:09:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MIAMI, Fla. – Before you could blink, the Middle Tennessee women's soccer team took the lead against Florida International. Before you could blink a couple more times, the Raiders were up 3-0, giving them plenty of cushion as they held onto win by that score, Friday night in Miami.
The Blue Raiders improve to 2-2 this season, all of which has been Conference USA action, while the Panthers fall to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
MTSU had the advantage where it counted, but the rest of the match was relatively even as the Raiders outshot the Panthers 9-8, 5-3 on shots on goal while FIU had four corner kicks to the Middle Tennessee's three. Both teams had eight fouls and each team was called for offsides once.
Peyton DePriest got the party started in the second minute as she found herself in space on the left side off a pass from Eleanor Gough. After a couple of dribbles, she found the back of the net, sneaking it past the keeper with her left foot.
In the eighth minute, the Raiders doubled their lead as a misplay by the FIU defender and goalkeeper led to an own goal by the Panthers.
Middle Tennessee scored their third goal of the half less than two minutes later when Gough tallied a goal for the first time in her Raider career. Off a pass from Taylor Hamlett, she fired a shot from a tough angle past the keeper and into the back of the net.
Hannah Suder earned her second shutout of the season, making three saves in the process.
The Blue Raiders will return to action next Friday when they host Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.
