BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After splitting a doubleheader yesterday, the Middle Tennessee baseball team dropped the third game of the four-game set, 8-5, at Young Memorial Field. The Blue Raiders (12-10, C-USA 1-2) couldn't outlast the Blazers (9-12, C-USA 2-1) after taking a 5-2 lead into the sixth inning.
The Blue Raiders were powered early by good two-out hitting and collected six of their nine hits and scored four of their five runs with two outs through the first four innings.
Brett Coker led off the scoring in the top second inning, coming across on a passed ball by the Blazer catcher after reaching on a single through the left side.
JT Mabry traded places with Jake Hagenow on a double that hit off the glove of the diving Blazer center fielder and gave MT an early 2-1 lead.
Mabry later scored on an RBI single by Luke Vinson who was thrown out at second trying to stretch his single into a double, but extended the Raider lead to 3-1.
UAB got a run back in the bottom of the third inning, but that run was erased after a two-out triple from Jake Hagenow and an RBI double by JT Mabry.
Mabry finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate, scored a run, and picked up a pair of doubles and a pair of RBI.
Hunter Sullivan hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to stretch the Blue Raider lead to 5-2.
UAB began to make a push for the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, grabbing two runs on a double to right field, but the Blazers held at 5-4 through the seventh.
Blue Raider starting pitcher Peyton Wigginton threw a solid seven innings, by walking just one and striking out six, but ran out of gas in the eighth inning after a leadoff double and single to follow.
UAB struck for four runs, on three hits, and two walks in the eighth to take an 8-5 lead.
MT threatened in the ninth by loading the bases with one out, but couldn't push a run across in the top half of the last inning.
The series finale between the Blue Raiders and the Blazers will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. The series will change venues for the final game, heading over to Regions Field for game four.
