MURRAY, Ky. — It took three extra innings, but Middle Tennessee (14-12, 0-0 C-USA) came away with a win at Murray State (14-16, 11-3 OVC) and a much-needed confidence boost ahead of Conference USA play, which starts on Thursday.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 3, MURRAY STATE 1 (10 Inn.)
» Murray State entered Tuesday afternoon's matchup as winners of seven of its last eight games.
» Both of the game's starting pitchers were perfect through two quick innings, but that ended with two outs in the top of the third, as Nahri Tath-Slezak hustled for a double with two outs.
» Tath-Slezak proceeded to swipe third base and was brought home on a single through the left side by Summer Burgess for the game's first run.
» The Racers led off the bottom of the third with a base hit, but Tath-Slezak caught a fly ball and tossed it over to Lexi Cushing for a double play to help pitcher Amber Baldwin face the minimum through three innings.
» MT threatened again with two outs in the fourth, as Claire Smith singled up the middle and Lani Rodriguez walked, but when a short rain delay subsided, the Racers got the third out to keep the Blue Raider lead from expanding.
» Murray State capitalized on MT's inability to get another run across, as the Racers plated one in the bottom half of the fourth and tied the game.
» Neither offense provided much resistance in the fifth, sixth or seventh innings, so the game headed to extra innings.
» Burgess doubled to lead off the eighth inning to ensure her fifth multi-hit game of the year. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kelci Hill but was unable to move 60 more feet to score the go-ahead run.
» Just as Burgess did two innings earlier, Tath-Slezak opened the 10th with a double. She was brought around to score the go-ahead run thanks to Burgess's second double of the day and first multi-RBI game of the season.
» Adding more insurance in the 10th, Burgess scored on a Kaylee Richetto sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
» Baldwin finished off the complete game in the bottom half of the inning to secure a new career high for innings pitched.
» MT is now 3-0 in extra inning games this year, and Tuesday's meeting with the Racers marked the second 10-inning game of the season for the Blue Raiders.
QUOTES FROM THE BLUE RAIDERS
» Head Coach Jeff Breeden on Amber Baldwin's resurgence and performance in the circle on Tuesday: "Baldwin showed she was back to her regular self and had good stuff through all 10 innings today. We'll need those types of efforts as we go into these four-game weekend series starting this week."
» Breeden on Nahri Tath-Slezak and Summer Burgess connecting for scoring plays twice: "Nahri gives us a good punch in the nine-hole with Summer and Kelci [Hill] coming back at the top. It was good to see them put us on the board today. And defensively, Lani [Rodriguez] and Nahri made great plays today. Those 9-3 putouts were huge plays."
» Pitcher Amber Baldwin on how this game impacted her confidence and the team's momentum: "I can't remember the last time I threw 10 innings, but my arm feels great. This game was definitely a confidence booster for myself and the team. We stayed in the game as a team and made some good plays to back me up, and I think we'll continue to do that going into conference play."
» Baldwin on her role as league play begins this week: "I'm just going to be prepared for when I get the ball in my hand and keep us in a game, and if I don't, my role will be to fire up the pitching staff when they're in the game and support them the best I can."
