MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — After a stellar week at The Spring Games and leading her team in the batter's box and in the field, Middle Tennessee shortstop Summer Burgess has been named Conference USA's Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Monday's honor marks the second time Burgess has been recognized by the league in 2021, as she was named to the C-USA Preseason Team on Feb. 4.
The fifth-year Blue Raider led her team in hits (9), runs (5), triples (2), total bases (15) and slugging percentage (.682) at the dish while also sporting a .409 batting average and a 4-for-4 mark in stolen base attempts. In the field, Burgess collected a team-leading 15 putouts with a fielding percentage of .903.
"This is a great honor for Summer and our program," MT head coach Jeff Breeden said. "She had a great week for us. She also exemplifies the best qualities of an NCAA athlete and is a great leader and ambassador for our University."
Burgess, a Delray Beach, Florida native, recorded a hit and was involved in a scoring play in all six of her team's games over the weekend. The three-hit performance against Toledo on Friday was a new season-high for hits in a game and was one shy of tying her career high.
Despite being two singles away of MT's all-time program record, it wasn't just singles that got the job done over the weekend. The Blue Raider leadoff hitter showed off the power with two doubles and MT's first two triples of the season, including the game-winning RBI triple in a 2-1 win over Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
Even though it's her first C-USA weekly honor, Burgess is no stranger to C-USA awards, as she started her career on the league's Freshman Team in 2017. MT's shortstop was on the C-USA Second Team in 2018 before being upgraded to First Team in 2019. The league did not name All-Conference performers last year.
Burgess and the Blue Raiders host the MTSU Invitational this weekend at the new and improved Blue Raider Softball Field.
