Blue Raiders down Marshall, 3-1

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee volleyball team defeated Marshall Monday afternoon in four sets (23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-16).
For the seventh time this season, junior Samira Lawson Body collected 10+ kills with 15 to lead the Blue Raider offense. Kayla Henley wrapped up a strong weekend, tallying 14 kills and 12 digs to earn her second double of the season. Amelia Van Der Werff also added 14 kills with three blocks and two digs.
Defensively, sophomore libero Marley Banton picked up a career-high 25 digs. Setter Taylor Eisert collected 52 assists and 11 digs to earn her second straight double-double.
Middle Tennessee went ahead early as they opened a 5-1 lead to begin the match. Marshall worked to cut the lead to two and stayed close on the Blue Raiders heels. Down 12-10, a 7-1 run gave the Thundering Herd a 17-13 lead in the opening set. Marshall used the late run and held on en route to a 25-23 opening set victory.
Middle Tennessee dominated the second set as they did not relinquish the lead the entire set. After finding a lead, the Blue Raiders were able to open up an 11-point advantage at 16-5. Marshall would try to claw back as they reeled off six straight points forcing Middle Tennessee to call a timeout. The Blue Raiders regrouped and used a 4-1 run to take the set 25-17 and tie the match.
Middle Tennessee continued to apply pressure offensively as they earned 20 kills in the third set. Down 6-1 early, the Blue Raiders would fire back and take a 12-10 lead. The Blue Raiders never trailed the rest of the frame en route to a 25-18 win in the third set.
Middle Tennessee once again dominated the fourth frame as they did not relinquish the lead. The Blue Raiders broke it open with a 10-3 lead early. The Thundering Herd attempted to fight back, but the Blue Raider offense was just too much as they clinched the set and the match win.
Middle Tennessee will square off against North Alabama on Thursday night inside Alumni Memorial Gym. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT.
