HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Middle Tennessee baseball team was shutout in both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Southern Miss. The Blue Raiders (21-24-1, C-USA 10-16-1) were held hitless by Golden Eagles' (32-15, C-USA 19-7) starting pitcher Walker Powell and lost 6-0 in game-one. In game-two MT was held to just three hits and fell to the Golden Eagle 9-0.
"[Southern Miss] is probably the most complete team that we've faced all year long," said Head Coach Jim Toman. "We couldn't put anything together and we didn't get the pitching that we usually get, so it was a tough day for us."
GAME 1: Southern Miss 6, MT 0
Golden Eagle starting pitcher Walker Powell no-hit the Blue Raiders in the 6-0 game-one win in Hattiesburg. Powell's performance on senior day earned him his 28th career win at Southern Miss and the program's eighth no-hitter in school history.
"[Powell] was really good, he's been around a while," said Toman. "We couldn't put anything together against him."
The last time the Blue Raiders were held hitless was earlier this season on March 13th against Valparaiso in Murfreesboro.
GAME 2: Southern Miss 9, MT 0
In the second game of the twin ticket, the Golden Eagles struck for a combined six runs against Blue Raider starting pitcher Aaron Brown in the second and third inning. Brown exited the game after pitching 2.2 innings, marking his shortest outing of the season.
"[Brown] didn't have as good of stuff today, you could tell that early on," said Toman. "[Brown] was leaving everything up and he didn't have the good velocity we normally see from him... With about ten mile-per-hour winds we knew if [Southern Miss] kept hitting fly balls a couple of them would go out and they did."
Brown turned the ball over to left-hander Drew Vaden. The junior pitched 2.1 innings allowed no runs and struck out one Golden Eagle batter.
Luke Vinson picked up the first hit of the day for the Blue Raiders in the top of the third inning. MT was held hitless for 9.1 innings up to that point.
Vinson finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate and also made a couple of good defensive plays in center field.
"I'm glad to see [Vinson] do well," said Toman. "We only had three hits today and he had two of them… He works har and he's a good player."
The Blue Raider will wrap up the series in Hattiesburg tomorrow at Pete Taylor Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
"[Southern Miss] has a really good team over there," said Toman. "We have to try and fight back tomorrow. We have Wigginton on the mound tomorrow, [Southern Miss] is throwing a lefty, and we hit lefties a lot better than we hit righties so I'm optimistic about tomorrow."
