NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Backed by an incredible full-team effort, Middle Tennessee Soccer (4-3-1) earned a huge 2-1 upset victory over reigning SEC tournament champions, the Vanderbilt Commodores, and capture the team's first-ever win against Vanderbilt and its first win against a Power 5/SEC opponent since Sept. 13, 2013.
Senior Peyton DePriest collected her second brace, moving her career total to 53 goals, and first game-winning goal of the season. Sophomores Mia Roberts and Taylor Hamlett tallied an assist each in the contest.
Junior Hannah Suder was an absolute brick wall for the Blue Raiders, playing all 90 minutes in net and recording a career-high eight saves against the Commodores.
The first half was a defensive back-and-forth battle. Middle Tennessee controlled the game early, outshooting Vanderbilt 3-1 through the 25th minute. However, the Commodores limited the Blue Raiders opportunities over the final 20 minutes of the half and committed five shots but to no success to close out the half and send both sides into the locker room locked at nil.
Vanderbilt didn't waste any time in the second half as the Commodores' Madison Elwell delivered a ball from the goal line to Rachel Deresky in the box and kicking the ball backwards with her heel to put the Commodores on the board first in the 48th minute. Following the score, the Blue Raiders kept battling tough with the Commodores. Suder locked in defensively tallying five saves over the first 20 minutes of the second stanza.
In the 67th minute, DePriest picked up a ball in Commodore territory, bringing it across the halfway line. With a defender in front of her, DePriest passed the ball to Roberts, who immediately returned the ball after DePriest juked the Commodore defender and split the legs of the Vanderbilt keeper to net the equalizer and bring things even at one apiece, 1-1.
Both sides continued to trade shots over the final 25 minutes of play, but it was the Blue Raiders that would ultimately capitalize on their opportunities. Senior Sam DeBien lofts a ball from behind the halfway line and placing it perfectly in front of a sprinting Hamlett. Hamlett collects the ball and crosses it to the opposite post to find DePriest, who heads in the go-ahead score and eventually game-winner for the Blue Raiders.
In the 88th minute, the Commodores set up for a free kick in the center circle and delivering it inside the box. After the ball bounced around a couple times, Suder left the goal box to try and snag the ball, however unsuccessful, the Commodores put their final shot on target to find Caroline Manley alone in the net to make an incredible game-saving block with her right foot to seal the 2-1 upset victory.
