Slump to the Quarterfinals at the ITA Regional Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Stijn Slump continues to impress at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship. Slump punched his ticket to the Quarterfinals men's open singles main draw on Saturday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville on Saturday.

John Chin, Chris Edge, Stepan Holis, Pavel Motl, Stijn Slump, and Francisco Rocha represented the blue and white on the third day of the regional championship.

In singles, nationally-ranked Slump upset fourth-seeded George Harwell of Vandy in the Round of 16, 6-4, 6-1. Slump won his third straight set victory of the regional and will play in the Quarterfinals on Sunday. Slump is the final Blue Raider standing in the singles main draw

In consolation singles play, Holis won his second consecutive match against Frederic Schlossman of Austin Peay in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Motl also advanced to the Round of 16 with a victory over Indiana's Nishanth Basavareddy, 6-2, 6-3. In Holis' second singles match of the day he had a straight set victory over, Butler's Borja Miralles. Motl keeps his regional run alive with a walkover. Holis and Motl both move on to tomorrow's Quarterfinals back draw.

In doubles, the third-seeded and nationally-ranked tandem of Motl and Slump advanced to the Quarterfinals via walkover. In their second doubles match of the day, the duo prevailed over the 5-seed Adams/Kovacevic of Ball State, 8-6. Fifth-seeded Edge and Rocha lost to Chattanooga's Gatti/Rodriguez in a hard-fought match, 8-5.

In consolation doubles play, Chin and Holis fell in their match, 8-3.

Tomorrow's action will begin with Slump in the Quarterfinals with the singles main draw followed by the Semifinals in the doubles main draw. Consolation matches will be played out in the same tournament style format.
