DALLAS – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team picked up its first C-USA player of the week honor this season, after recording a series sweep over Charlotte this past weekend. Redshirt sophomore Marley Banton has been named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office Monday afternoon.
The Florida native is having a career year on defense averaging 4.31 digs per set through eight matches, including 6.33 which she averaged against Charlotte in two matches. Her current 4.31 digs per set on the season would sit at the top of individual season record during the 25-point rally scoring era (2008-pres.) and would tie for second all-time with one of the best student-athletes to walk through Murfreesboro in Alicia Lemau'u. On the offensive side, Banton climbed up to fifth place for career service aces during the 25-point rally scoring era with 70. She currently sits 35 service aces out of first place and nine away from fourth on the list.
Friday night in the first match of the weekend series with Charlotte, Banton set her new career-high in digs with 27 total to go along with tying her career-high four service aces for the seventh time. The next night against Charlotte she followed her outstanding performance with another masterpiece, beating Charlotte in five sets and setting a new career-high in digs again with 30. Banton's defensive contributions helped lead Middle Tennessee to their first 2-0 start in Conference USA and their first wins over Charlotte since 2017.
Middle Tennessee hits the road for a C-USA series with the 4-11 Marshall Thundering Herd on Friday, October 1 at 5 p.m. CT and Saturday, October 2 at 1 p.m. CT.
