SAN DIEGO – Middle Tennessee Softball fell in its SDSU Season Kickoff finale 2-1 against the UIC Flames on Sunday.
The Blue Raiders struck first in the contest. Mealer led off the top of the second, drawing a six-pitch walk to get things started for the Blue Raiders. Mealer moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Rodriguez, before stealing third to sit 60 feet from home plate.
Freshman Claire Czajkowski followed Rodriguez, connecting on her third pitch of the at-bat to knock a perfect single down the left-field line and score Mealer, giving the Blue Raiders the early 1-0 lead.
Middle Tennessee held the UIC Flames runless through the fifth inning, however the Flames led the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff single. The Flames then knocked in their first run off a double down the left-field line and followed it up with a single to left center to bring two across and take a 2-1 lead.
The Blue Raiders were able to earn another hit in the top of the sixth as senior Lani Rodriguez singled to the pitcher and beat out the throw to first, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Raiders couldn't push across a tying run to fall 2-1 on Sunday.
Czajkowski led the Blue Raiders, going 2-for-3 at the plate and knocking in the Blue Raiders' one RBI of the day. Rodriguez batted a perfect 2-for-2 on the day. Sophomore Amaya Harris also had a perfect day at the plate, going 1-for-1 and drawing a pair of walks in the contest.
In the circle, freshman Claire Woods got the nod to start the game. She pitched five innings of work, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out two batters. Senior Gretchen Mead came in relief of Woods, pitching a 1-2-3 inning and recording a strikeout through three batters.
