Blue Raiders fall to UAlbany and Georgetown on Spring Games opening day

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Middle Tennessee Softball fell in a pair of contests on the opening day of the Spring Games, falling 3-2 against UAlbany, before dropping a high-scoring 8-7 affair against Georgetown at R.O.C Park in Madeira Beach, Florida.
Middle Tennessee 2 – UAlbany 3
UAlbany struck first to take an early lead. The Great Danes opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff single to get things started. Dodd threw her first strikeout of the contest, but the Great Danes knocked a one-out double through the right side to plate their first run of the game and take a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders responded in the third. Sophomore Amaya Harris got Middle Tennessee started, taking her base after being struck by a pitch. Junior Kelci Hill reached on a fielder's choice and Harris was safe at second after an error from the Great Dane shortstop, putting two on with no outs. Mealer moved the runners over on an unassisted groundout to first, putting Harris and Hill in scoring position. Freshman Anyce Harvey connected on a one-out double through the left side to plate Harris and even the game at one apiece halfway through the third.
However, it wasn't long until the Great Danes retook the lead. Following a groundout and a Blue Raider strikeout, UAlbany got one aboard off a two-out single placed in the gap at left center. UAlbany then hit a two-run home run over the center-field wall to retake the lead 3-1.
It wasn't long until the Blue Raiders would respond. Rodriguez led off the fourth with a six-pitch walk, before Bosley reached on a fielder's choice to put two on with no outs. Sargent bunted a single to the catcher to load the bases. Harris reached on an error by right field to plate Rodrigez and bring the Blue Raiders back within one. The Blue Raiders couldn't record another hit as a fielder's choice, a strikeout and a flyout would close out the fourth with the Blue Raiders still trailing by one.
Middle Tennessee was able to get another hit in the sixth off a single from Sargent, but the Blue Raiders couldn't get the offense going again as the Great Danes would eventually take the 3-2 victory.
Sargent led the Blue Raiders against the Great Danes, going 2-for-3 in the contest. Harvey also had a good game for the Blue Raiders, batting 1-for-4 with an RBI. Czajkowski recorded the Blue Raiders other hit, going 1-for-3 against the Great Danes. Rodriguez and Harris recorded the Blue Raiders two runs.
Freshman Keri Munn pitched a complete game against UAlbany, going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits and tallying four strikeouts.
Middle Tennessee 7 – Georgetown 8
The Hoyas got things started in the opening frame. After a flyout and a groundout, Georgetown connected on a two-out double into right field to get a runner into scoring position. The Hoys drew a walk to put two on before Georgetown connected on a two-out home run over the center-field wall to take a 3-0 lead after one.
Middle Tennessee got one back in the fourth. Sargent and Bosley drew a pair of walks to get two on with no one out. Herring groundout to the pitcher to move Sargent and Jacoway, who came in to pinch run for Bosley, into scoring position. Harris hit a sacrifice fly into right field to plate Sargent and cut the Blue Raiders deficit down to two, 3-1.
In the top of the fifth, Georgetown opened the frame with back-to-back singles to put two on. Both runners stole a base to put two Hoyas in scoring position. Georgetown then connected on a two-RBI double into left center to push Georgetown's lead out to four, 5-1. The Blue Raiders then made a pitching change, sending out senior Kailey Ahlstrom. The first Hoya Ahlstrom faced hit the second pitch of her at-bat over the right-center wall to tack on two more for the Hoyas and extend Georgetown's lead to six, 7-1.
Mealer opened the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff double. Harvey followed Mealer with back-to-back doubles, bringing Mealer around to cut the Blue Raiders deficit to five. Senior Mia Marinakis knocked the Blue Raiders third hit of the inning, connecting on a single into right center to bring across Harvey and bring the Blue Raiders back within four.
The Hoyas got one back in the top of the sixth, after placing two on with a two-out single and a hit by pitch. Georgetown then connected on another two-out single into center field to kick the Hoyas lead back out to five, 8-3.
The Blue Raiders looked to rally in the bottom of the sixth. Shoulders led things off with a hit by pitch, and then Mealer drew a six-pitch walk to put two runners on with no outs in the inning. Georgetown went to the bullpen with Harvey on deck, but it didn't help as Harvey connected on two-RBI triple down the left-field line to plate Shoulders and Mealer and cut the Blue Raiders deficit down to three, 8-5. Czajkowski brought in the third run of the inning for the Blue Raiders, hitting one-out single through the right side to bring across Harvey and bring the Blue Raiders within two entering the seventh.
Georgetown recorded a hit in the top of the seventh, but the Blue Raiders were able to limit the other Hoya hitters to keep the game within two as the Blue Raiders took the plate in the seventh.
Following a groundout from Harris, Shoulders was hit by pitch yet again and a double from Mealer put two Blue Raiders in scoring position with the tying run on second. Harvey knocked a sacrifice hit to second as she was picked off at first, but she brought across Shoulders to bring the Blue Raiders within one and moved the tying run, Mealer, to third. However, the Hoyas threw one more strikeout to close out the game and prevent the Blue Raiders comeback as they would fall 8-7.
Mealer led the Blue Raiders against the Hoyas, going 3-for-4 and scoring two runs in the contest. Harvey also had an incredible game, plating a career-high four RBIs, while going 2-for-2 with a double and Harvey's first career triple. Marinakis also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 and knocking in one RBI. Harris and Czajowski both went 1-for-4 and tallied an RBI against the Hoyas, while Sargent and freshman Ava Tepe also recorded hits in the contest for the Blue Raiders.
Senior Corrina Dodd got the start in the circle, putting in four innings of work and allowing six runs on eight hits, and tallying three strikeouts. Ahlstrom came in relief of Dodd, pitching three innings and allowing two runs on five hits and punching out a pair of Georgetown batters.
