HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – For the first time since the season's opening weekend, Middle Tennessee baseball (15-15, 7-5 C-USA) is .500 after a doubleheader sweep against Marshall Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders won their third straight Conference USA series and improved to 6-2 in doubleheaders on the season.
Game 1: Middle Tennessee 3, Marshall 1
One game after hitting his first Blue Raider home run, Luke Vinson blasted another one over the fence and added an RBI single to push Middle Tennessee past Marshall 3-1 in game one.
Blue Raider pitching was outstanding as Jaden Hamm (3-2) struck out six and didn't allow a hit in three innings of relief. Eriq Swan pitched four innings, struck out two and allowed one earned run on a wild pitch.
MT overcame a slow start at the plate as four straight Blue Raiders were hit by a pitch to bring home the game's first run in the fourth.
Marshall responded in the bottom half of the inning as a leadoff double came around to score. Vinson's RBI single in the fifth put the Blue Raiders back in front as Hamm was called in to pitch in the fifth inning.
The sophomore from Culleoka, Tenn. held the Herd offense in check the rest of the way. Vinson added an insurance run on his solo shot in the top of the seventh and Hamm pitched around a two-out walk to secure the win.
Eston Snider recorded his first collegiate Blue Raider hit on a leadoff single in the sixth.
Game 2: Middle Tennessee 5, Marshall 2
Middle Tennessee shook off a bumpy start in game two to win the rubber match 5-2.
After Marshall hit two home runs in the bottom of the first, Brett Coker hit a leadoff single, Briggs Rutter was hit by a pitch and Brycen Thomas reached on a fielder's choice. All three came around to score in a three-run top of the second.
Four Blue Raider batters singled in the top of the third, including Rutter's RBI single up the middle to send in two and make it a 5-2 game.
Blue Raider starter Peyton Wigginton (4-2) settled in starting with a 1-2-3 second inning. Wigginton worked out of trouble in the third, pitching around a leadoff single, and again in the fourth by stranding runners on the corners to keep MT in front. The southpaw struck out five batters.
Wigginton then retired 10 of his final 11 batters faced, including five straight to get the sweep and his second consecutive complete game.
Eston Snider added two more hits and an RBI for the Blue Raiders while Rutter reached twice on a hit and two-RBI single. Snider finished the day 3-for-4 with a stolen base and RBI.
