FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee finished the second round of the Mason Rudolph Championship in fourth place Saturday, slipping one spot from its position to start the day. Nick Wolf remains in the top five, dropping from second to a tie for fourth.
The Blue Raiders recorded a team score of 282 (-2) Saturday on the par-71, 7,100-yard south course at Vanderbilt Legends Club and head into Sunday's third round at 558 (-10). Wolf was one of three MT players to card a 70 (-1) in the second round and sits at 135 (-7), five strokes off the individual lead.
"I thought we did a good job of just keeping the ball in play," head coach Mark McEntire said. "We've got a really, really good team. These guys are starting to really gel. It would be nice for it to all fall into place tomorrow and get five balls into play and see what happens."
After nine straight pars on the front nine, Wolf finished with birdies on two of his final five holes to end at 70 (-1).
Michael Barnard recorded a team-high five birdies on the way to his second straight 70 (-1). He ended the second round where he started it – in a tie for 21st at 140 (-2).
Connor Daly used an eagle on the par 5 15th hole to get under par for the day and stayed there, finishing the round with a 70 (-1). The Nashville native ended the day in a tie for 30th at 141 (-1) after recording back-to-back rounds of par or better for the first time as a Blue Raider.
Owen Stamper stumbled at the end of the day, bogeying holes 16 and 17 to end up at 73 (+2). He slipped to a tie for 40th at 143 (+1).
Kevin Jegers had a roller coaster of a round, going eagle-double bogey-birdie-bogey to close out the front nine. He carded a 72 (+1) all told and enters the final round tied for 67th at 148 (+6).
MT is 22 strokes behind No. 3 Vanderbilt for the team lead. The three teams ahead of the Blue Raiders are the Commodores, No. 43 Liberty (-20) and No. 20 Tennessee (-13). Middle Tennessee holds a two-stroke lead over No. 33 Ohio State.
Two of the three players ahead of Wolf on the individual leaderboard are ranked in Golfstat's top 50: leader Cole Sherwood of Vanderbilt (-12) is ranked No. 9 in the nation, while fellow Commodore Reid Davenport (-8) entered the event at No. 48 in the country. Nine other top-100 players sit behind Wolf in the individual standings.
Daly's and Jegers' eagles Saturday put MT in a tie with Santa Clara for the lead with two eagles in the event.
The Blue Raiders will tee off with Ohio State and Cincinnati with tee times starting at 10:50 on hole 1.
