Barnard leads Blue Raiders in first round of C-USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Texas – Middle Tennessee ended the first round of the Conference USA Championship in a tie for eighth place Monday at 294 (+6). Michael Barnard leads the Blue Raiders at 70 (-2), ending the day in a tie for sixth individually.
"I have a great team," head coach Mark McEntire said. "I thought Mike played a solid round of golf today. The plan tomorrow is to move up the board and get into position to make match play."
After going a combined 10-over on the front nine, Middle Tennessee's five-man lineup was 2-over on the back nine. The Blue Raiders carded four birdies on the 12th hole and three on the 17th.
Barnard carded a team-high four birdies on the day, including three on the back nine. He was one of 16 players in the 65-player field to finish the day under par. Barnard's 1-under performance on par 3 holes was the second-best among the field, while his 3-under showing on par 5s was tied for fourth.
Nick Wolf and Owen Stamper finished the round tied for 31st at 74 (+2). Each carded three birdies on the round.
Connor Daly wrapped up the day at 76 (+4), tying for 50th. Kevin Jegers matched Barnard's team-leading four birdies, but still carded a 78 (+6), tying for 59th with the Blue Raiders' non-counting score for the round.
MT is tied for eighth with Charlotte, the highest-ranked team in C-USA at No. 28 in the Golfstat rankings. With 36 holes remaining in stroke play, Blue Raiders are 13 strokes behind first-place Florida Atlantic and eight strokes out of the top four and a position in the match play portion of the tournament.
Barnard sits three strokes behind Marshall's Tyler Jones for the individual lead.
The second round starts Tuesday morning with tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m. CT.
