Akintola, Chepkemei Earn C-USA Athlete of the Week Honors

DALLAS – Freshman Alaba Akintola and graduate student Eusila Chepkemei are taking home their third and fourth combined Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors of the outdoor season for their performances during the Indiana Invitational and Georgia Tech Invite, Friday, April 22nd and Saturday, April 23rd.
Akintola competed in the men's 200 meter and 4x100 at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday, April 23. Akintola took second behind the nation's leader in the 200 meter with a program-record time of 20.34 seconds (-0.9). His new personal-best erases a 28-year-old mark set in 1994 by Roland McGhee. Alaba currently sits at first in conference and 10th in the nation for the 200m, his second top-10 mark in the nation currently (100m). He also helped lead his team to a first-place finish in the men's 4x100 with a time of 40.51 seconds. This is Alaba's third athlete of the week honor of the outdoor season.
Chepkemei competed in the 1500 meter at the Indiana Invitational on Friday, April 22. Chepkemei broke her fifth program record of the track season with a time of 4:13.16 in a first-place finish. Her new best replaces the previous 4:17.75 record set by Agnes Abu in 2017. She is currently first in conference and fifth in the nation for the women's 1500 meter. This is Eusila's second athlete of the week honor for the outdoor season.
Akintola and Chepkemei have combined for eight of nine program records broken during the indoor and outdoor season so far.
What's next for the Blue Raiders?
The Middle Tennessee track and field team is heading to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Thursday, April 28th, and Friday, April 29th before heading to the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
