Blue Raiders drop game one to UTSA
4/29/2022 10:22:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee baseball got behind early and could never recover on Friday, falling 13-2 to UTSA to open the weekend series at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Zach Keenan stuck out six Roadrunners while only allowing one run through the game's first three innings, but a four-run fourth inning and two runs given up the sixth proved to be too much to overcome, as the Blue Raider bats never quite came alive outside of a Mason Spiers solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
"It's one game, it doesn't matter whether its 17-0 or 1-0," head coach Jim Toman said. "They swung the bats well, Keenan threw strikes but we didn't get their lefties out. That's why they're where they are in the standings. They're an older, veteran, good hitting team. Need to get some rest tonight and come back with a little bit more energy tomorrow."
Only one Blue Raider, Brett Coker, smacked more than one hit on Friday, leaving eight baserunners on base in the process, striking out 11 times against the Roadrunner pitching staff.
Middle Tennessee falls to 21-18, 11-8 in C-USA play, while UTSA improves to 29-13, 13-6 in C-USA.
"They thoroughly outplayed us, but we've got tomorrow," Toman said. "I've already forgotten about this one. I told the players to flush it, come out with a great attitude and play as hard as we can."
After UTSA scored the first five runs of the evening on a trio of home runs, Middle Tennessee got one of their own with authority, as Spiers blasted a home run into Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium's concourse behind left center field, adding one run to cut the Roadrunner's lead to 5-1.
UTSA added three more runs to their lead between the top of the sixth and the top of the eighth, but Middle Tennessee scratched another across in the bottom half of the frame. A hit by pitch and walk put runners on first and second, where Coker singled to left, driving in Wyatt Morgan from second, reducing the MT deficit to 8-2.
An array of Blue Raider pitchers gave up five runs in the top of the ninth on just one UTSA hit to push the score to the final margin.
Middle Tennessee and UTSA are scheduled to play Game 2 of their three-game series tomorrow at 3 p.m.
With rain in the forecast for Sunday, Sunday's finale may be moved up to Saturday to create a doubleheader following the conclusion of tomorrow's 3 p.m. game. Stay tuned to MT Baseball's social media channels and GoBlueRaiders.com for updates.
