SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Middle Tennessee wrapped up the first day of the Maryb S. Kauth Inivitational in sixth place Tuesday after recording a team score of 600 (+24) at San Antonio Country Club. Sophie Burks heads into Tuesday's third round in a tie for 10th at 145 (+1).
MT slipped from fifth place at the end of the first round to sixth by the end of the day, following up a first-round 293 (+5) with a 307 (+19) in the second round as the temperatures in San Antonio increased from the low 70s at the start of play to the mid-90s by the afternoon.
"We had a pretty good morning round and still had it going into the second round but just gave back several shots at the end of the round," head coach Chris Adams said. "It was a pretty tough day considering the high temperatures and pretty breezy this afternoon, along with the 36-hole day."
Burks started the day with a 72 (E) in the first round, carding three birdies on the back nine. Her score of 73 (+1) was the Blue Raiders' best of the second round.
Madison Smith's first-round score of 71 (-1) was MT's best of the first two rounds. The senior from Louisville, Ky., birdied three of her first five holes of the day and ended play in a tie for 18th place at 147 (+5).
"Sophie was pretty solid and consistent today," Adams said. "Madison had a great round this morning. We have a chance to move up in the standings tomorrow with a good round by everyone."
Molly Bebelaar contributed the Blue Raiders' third-best score in each round, carding a 74 (+2) and a 76 (+4) to end the day in a tie for 24th at 150 (+6).
Caroline Caudill wrapped up the day in a tie for 40th at 156 (+12). Her sister, Catherine Caudill, rounded out the MT lineup in a tie for 45th at 159 (+15).
Playing as an individual, Taylor Edlin ended the day tied for 40th at 156 (+12).
Future Conference USA member Sam Houston leads the field at 579 (+3). Burks heads into the final round four strokes out of second place and nine behind the individual leader.
The third and final round begins with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
