MIAMI – Middle Tennessee Softball (17-22, 4-7 C-USA) struggled to get the bats going on Saturday as the Blue Raiders dropped game two of their series against FIU (16-21, 2-9 C-USA) 6-2 at Felsberg Field at FIU Softball Stadium.
FIU's Alexis Ross opened the game with a leadoff single, before stealing second to get into scoring position. The Panthers put two on after a walk, but then connected on a fielder's choice and Ross eventually scored on a Blue Raider error to take the opening 1-0 lead.
In the second, the Panthers drew a leadoff walk before back-to-back singles from Makayla Garcia and Ross loaded the bases. FIU's Venessa Gallegos then connected on her fifth pitch to put a grand slam over the wall just right of the left-field foul pole to give the Panthers a 5-0 lead.
FIU added another run in the third. Abigail Brown led off the inning with a leadoff double before a one-out single down the left-field line plated Brown and extended the Panthers' lead to six, 6-0.
In the fifth, junior Kelci Hill and freshman Claire Czajkowski connected on back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and get two Blue Raiders aboard with no one out. Sophomore Shelby Sargent then advanced Hill and Czajkowski on a groundout to put both runners in scoring position. Freshman Ave Tepe then knocked an RBI-groundout to shortstop to bring across Hill and get the Blue Raiders on the board, 6-1.
The Blue Raiders tacked on more on in the seventh as Hill led the inning off with a double. A groundout from Czajkowski moved Hill to third, before another RBI-groundout from Sargent plated Hill and brought the game to its final, 6-2.
Hill led the Blue Raiders on Saturday, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and scoring both Blue Raiders' runs. Sophomore Amaya Harris and freshmen Claire Woods and Czajkowski also recorded hits in the contest for MT.
Woods opened on the mound for the Blue Raiders, going one inning and allowing five runs on four hits. Sophomore Danielle Taitt came in relief of Woods, putting in five innings of work to close out the game and only allowed one run on four hits, while tying a career-high with two strikeouts.
