First NCAA Doubles Championship Appearance Since 2009
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Senior Francisco Rocha and Freshman Oskar Brostrom Poulsen are set to represent Middle Tennessee and the Conference USA on Tuesday, May 24 in the NCAA Doubles Championship at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Illinios, Urbana-Champaign.
No. 70 Rocha and Brostrom Poulsen (14-8) earned the C-USA Automatic Bid by obtaining the highest-ranked doubles pairing in the conference at the conclusion of the regular season. The Blue Raider duo will face No. 28 Carl Emil Overbeck and Yuta Kikuchi of California (16-9) in the opening Round of 32.
Rocha and Brostrom Poulsen are looking to cap an incredible season together with a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. The duo finished the regular season portion of the schedule with a 14-8 overall record, nine of those 14 wins came on the top court. In the Spring, they took down two ITA ranked opponents in No. 17 Ryan Fishback/Jordan Chrysostom of Virginia Tech and No. 54 Martins Rocens/Fons Van Sambeek of NC State. Notably, the pair also defeated Finn Murgett/Tad Maclean of Auburn, who were finalists in the NCAA Championship the year prior.
Tuesday's match is the first MT selection to the doubles championship since 2009, where ATP Tour member and the No. 22 doubles player in the world John Peers/Robert McKenzie fell in the Round of 16 to Texas A&M.
As of Monday morning, Senior Stijn Slump is first on the NCAA Singles Championship alternates list. The Havelte, Netherlands product can earn a placement into the field if one member in the current field drops out.
No. 70 F. Rocha/O. Poulsen (Middle Tennessee) vs. No. 28 C. Overbeck/Y. Kikuchi (California)
With a win against Overbeck/Kikuchi of Cal, Rocha and Brostrom Poulsen would advance to the second round to take on the winner of the overall one-seed Luc Fomba/Jacob Fearnley of TCU or Charles Bertimon/Maxence Bertimon of Virginia Commonwealth.
