Lopez, Hamm Lift MT Past FIU
5/7/2022 9:51:00 PM | Baseball
MIAMI – In replacement of walking the stage inside the Murphy Center during MTSU's commencement, Fausto Lopez had two trips around the bases in Miami as Middle Tennessee baseball defeated FIU 5-1 Saturday night.
On the game's first pitch, Lopez blasted a home run to left field to put the Blue Raiders in front early. He continued his graduation party at FIU Baseball Stadium the next inning by hitting a three-run shot in his second at-bat to grow the MT lead to 4-0.
With the early run support, starter Jaden Hamm took control of the game from there. Aside from his one earned run allowed in the sixth, Hamm was excellent once again on the mound. In each of his past three starts, Hamm has set new career highs in innings pitched and has struck out at least eight batters in each game. Tonight, the right-hander threw eight innings, struck out eight, threw 124 pitches and held the Panthers to just one run off six hits.
Hamm struck out a batter in all but two of his innings pitched.
Outside of the two home runs, the Blue Raiders scored an insurance run on a Brett Coker bloop single to shallow right field in the seventh inning, stretching MT's lead to 5-1. Wyatt Morgan finished the night 3-for-4 while JT Mabry continued his impressive weekend with two hits. Mabry is eight for his last 11 at the dish. Mabry also stole two bases.
In a non-save situation, Peyton Wigginton pitched a scoreless ninth inning to cap off the win.
The Blue Raiders have now matched their 2021 win total (24 wins) and improve to 13-10 in C-USA play. They'll go for the series win tomorrow in a rubber match scheduled for 11 a.m. CDT. MT has won five straight games on Sundays and is 7-4 overall on the day. Five of the Sunday victories have clinched series wins.
Middle Tennessee baseball congratulates Mason Speirs, Fausto Lopez and student manager Chandler Todd on graduating as MTSU graduation ceremonies were held today.
