Has led the program to five championships in 12 seasons
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Fresh off one of the best men's tennis seasons in program history, head coach Jimmy Borendame has agreed to a new five-year contract extension, as announced by Director of Athletics Chris Massaro Thursday.
Borendame, who was named ITA Ohio Valley and Conference USA Coach of the Year, guided the Blue Raiders to their third straight C-USA Championship and a 28-5 record in 2021-22. The 28 wins were the most in program history and Middle Tennessee also fashioned its best record in its rich men's tennis history.
"Our tennis program has a national presence under Jimmy, so we are pleased to have him leading our program for the foreseeable future," said Chris Massaro, director of athletics at Middle Tennessee. "Our commitment to tennis is evident by the success of the program. We will break ground on a new facility this summer, and we also play at the Adams Tennis Center, which is one of the best indoor facilities in the country. This five-year extension shows our commitment to [Borendame], and the success he has established on and off the court, and in the community. We are very pleased to have him continue leading our nationally ranked program."
Middle Tennessee was awarded the No. 16 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and reached the Round of 32 for just the third time in program history. The Blue Raiders also had a 17-match win streak, equaling the longest in program history. They also defeated nine ITA ranked and eight power-5 opponents and had the highest ITA team rank in more than 20 years at 15th.
"It is important to note that Jimmy turned down overtures from SEC and Power 5 schools to continue to elevate our program," Massaro added. "We thank Dr. (Sidney) McPhee and the university's support, along with the tennis community and all who helped support our program to make this an attractive place for Jimmy and his family to live."
Borendame, who just completed his 12th season leading the Blue Raider tennis program, has fashioned an impressive 216-124 record. He has led Middle Tennessee men's tennis to five conference championships, three in C-USA (2019, 2021, 2022) and two in the Sun Belt Conference (2011, 2012). He is a 10-time coach of the year.
"I am extremely appreciative of the confidence the university and athletic administration has shown in me, as well as providing us the resources to develop Middle Tennessee into one of the premier tennis programs in the country," Borendame said. "We have tremendous facilities at Middle Tennessee and those, along with other resources and a strong commitment to tennis, makes our program very attractive to the top amateur tennis players nationally and internationally. Another plus is the exceptional support from the tennis community in Murfreesboro."
