NOTEBOOK: Odds and Ends from an even first football scrimmage
8/15/2022 5:00:00 PM | Football, General, Women's Soccer
Early scrimmages give Rick Stockstill and his staff a plethora of opportunities to evaluate players across their roster, as reps were split evenly between the first, second and third teams throughout the morning. The action on the field was pretty even too, with the offense taking advantage of a few busted coverages for easy touchdowns, while the defense racked up 17 tackles for a loss and five sacks amid a relentless blitz.
"We gave up some plays that we can control, but overall, it was a good first scrimmage," defensive end Jordan Ferguson said. "We've just got to be on the same page and do our job."

Stockstill was overall pleased with the progress and effort on both sides of the ball, save for one category: penalties. In the team's first practice with officials in 2022, the yellow flags were on the turf early and often on Saturday.
"We had way too many penalties on both sides of the ball," Stockstill said. "We had a couple of procedure penalties offensively, and we had a couple of pass interference penalties defensively. We've got to make sure we get that corrected, because you're not going to win games doing that."
The 17-year head coach was very pleased with his offense taking care of the football, as well as his defense's ability to get pressure. He also acknowledged that some of those penalties might be a result of players finally getting called on something they've been doing all camp, but that's no excuse when stepping out onto the field.
"You're so used to getting away with using your hands in practice because you don't have officials out there," Stockstill said. "But it doesn't matter if they're out there or not, you've got to be disciplined enough to play with technique."
Middle is scheduled to play its second full scrimmage of fall camp on Friday.

We can't wait to have you back at the Glass House soon to watch @MT_WBB and @MT_MBB on the new floor! 🤩 pic.twitter.com/M5xAN9OEJE
There are so many details in this I love. The outline of Tennessee at midcourt obviously is the highlight, but the Tri-Star out of bounds at midcourt is excellent as well. And I think the grey turned out really well. As so many of y'all shared online last night.
