MURFREESBORO – Former MTSU star Alex Suber will be the new cornerbacks coach for the Blue Raiders as announced by Head Coach Rick Stockstill on Tuesday.
"I am excited to welcome Alex and his family back to Middle Tennessee," said Stockstill. "He was an outstanding player here and has been exposed to a lot of football as a professional player in the Canadian Football League. He has experience coaching at the collegiate level and in the CFL. Alex will have an immediate impact on his players."
Suber spent the previous three years as the receivers and returners coach for the CFLs Ottawa Redblacks. During the 2022 season, Suber co-coordinated the offense at mid-season following a coordinator change. He mentored wide receiver Jaelon Acklin to CFL East All-Star status in 2022 and also receiver and returner Devonte Dedmon to CFL All-Star accolades in 2021.
"I am extremely grateful and honored to be back at Middle Tennessee," said Suber. "It has been nostalgic from the moment I stepped back on campus. I have had nothing but respect and love for Coach Stockstill as a former player and now being a part of the greatness he continues to build at MTSU.
"I can't wait to get my wife and son settled in and get to work. I love Middle Tennessee. This is home."
Before joining the Redblacks, Suber coached receivers at Murray State under Mitch Stewart from 2018 to 2019. Wide receiver Malik Honeycutt earned first team all-OVC honors and First Team All-American recognition under Suber in 2018 while receiver LaMartez Brooks was selected Preseason All-OVC in 2019.
Prior to his stint at MSU, he served as Lyon College's defensive coordinator in 2018. He was also invited to the Saskatchewan Roughriders training camp in 2017 as a guest coach and served as the secondary coach for the National Bowl All-Star Game in 2017.
As a professional player, Suber suited-up for Saskatchewan, Toronto and Winnipeg between 2010 and 2015. He played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 2010-2014 where he tied for the most interceptions on the team in 2013. Suber joined the Toronto Argonauts in 2014 before wrapping up his career at Saskatchewan in 2015.
He wrapped-up his CFL playing career with 76 games played and 261 tackles.
For the Blue Raiders, Suber played and lettered each year from 2005 to 2009. He started his career as a running back before moving to corner where he earned first team all-conference honors, was voted a permanent team captain, and played on two bowl teams. Suber played a key role in MTSU's New Orleans Bowl win over Southern Miss in 2009 with two TFLs, an interception and a pass breakup.
Suber, and his wife Valentine, have a son, Avi.
