Blue Raiders Suffer Saturday Setback against Evansville
3/11/2023 5:37:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee baseball allowed three Evansville Purple Ace runs in the third inning, and trailed for the remainder of Saturday's game at Reese Smith Jr. Field in a 5-3 loss.
After the Purple Aces threw the initial punch, the Blue Raiders promptly got two runs back in the bottom of the third, via an RBI single from SS Brett Coker and a Jeremiah Boyd sacrifice fly.
Evansville padded its lead in the fifth with a solo home run, and in the ninth on an MTSU wild pitch. The Blue Raiders would not go down without a fight however, and had the tying run at the plate in the final frame after a JT Mabry RBI single.
With the loss, the Blue Raiders fall to 7-7 and series moves to a rubber matchup between the teams Sunday afternoon.
The Skipper Speaks
"Today was a game that could have been had by either side. We gave them some runs early. They haven't given us much, so we had to kind of earn runs. Giving them opportunities, giving them baserunners, hitting a couple of batters and getting behind in the count hurt us," said head coach Jerry Meyers.
"We're trying to respond all the time, and trying to get shutdown innings if we score or if we don't score. We have to separate the parts of the game, and if something bad happens defensively or offensively, you have to keep the game separated and continue to compete."
By the Numbers
3-4: Coker went 3-4 Saturday with an RBI.
2-4: 1B DJ Wright was 2-4 on the afternoon.
4: Starting RHP Eriq Swan struck out four batters across 2.2 innings pitched, but took the losing decision.
6.1: MTSU's bullpen combined for 6.1 innings pitched, and allowed two runs. James Sells and Cole Torbett had 2.2 IP each, with Justin Lee closing the game out in the ninth.
Blue Raider Notes
The Raiders will be tested with their first series rubber game Sunday.
Mabry has recorded a hit in 10 consecutive games.
Boyd has recorded a hit in all but one game in 2023, and OF Eston Snider has reached base in all but one matchup this year.
Next Up
Sunday's series finale is set for 1:00 p.m. Sunday from Reese Smith Jr. Field. ESPN+ will stream the game, and WGNS will carry the radio broadcast in conjunction with GoBlueRaiders.com and the Varsity Network App.
