3/4/2023 7:42:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Baseball was looking to get back into the win column, but the Toledo Rockets took both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Reese Smith Jr. Field, 8-0 and 13-3.
The Mid-American Conference team clinches the series ahead of Sunday's weekend finale. The Blue Raiders meanwhile fall to 6-5 and 5-3 on the Murfreesboro campus.
Game 1
Starting pitcher Jaden Hamm entered the day with a 2-0 recorded and a a 1.38 ERA. The right-hander from Culleoka, Tenn. started the day strong, allowing just three baserunners in the opening four frames.
While Hamm struck out 10 batters, he left with a deficit and absorbed his first unfavorable decision in 2023.
RHP Ollie Akens entered the game out of the bullpen to make his career debut, with the freshman striking out four in three innings.
Jeremiah Boyd and JT Mabry combined for five of the eight MTSU hits in Game 1.
Game 2
Like Hamm in Game 1, RHP Eriq Swan set the tone early in MTSU's contest late Saturday afternoon. The righty struck out six and kept the Rockets off the board in the initial two innings but would exit the contest after 4.2 IP. Just like in the first matchup, Toledo scored first and never let go of the lead.
Down 3-0 in the fifth, the Blue Raiders got back in the game with a pair of RBI from DJ Wright and Briggs Rutter. But the Rockets responded with another three runs an inning later and did not look back the rest of the evening.

18: MTSU stranded a combined 18 runners on base.
.444: The Raiders batted .444 in leadoff situations.
The Skipper Speaks
"We've had momentum on our side when we take the lead [this season]. Those have been some of the times where we have been the most productive. We have to be able to do the same thing when we get behind a couple of runs," said head coach Jerry Meyers.
Blue Raider Notes
Boyd has logged at least one hit in each game this season, having went 2-4 in Game 1 and 1-4 in Game 2 Saturday.
Eston Snider drew a walk in Game 1 and was hit by a pitch in Game 2. He has reached base safely in each game.
