MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee's (18-18, 8-7 C-USA) series-opening game with the Rice Owls (16-21, 6-9 C-USA) has been suspended due to weather and will pick back up tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. with game two of the series following approximately 30 minutes from the conclusion of tonight's ballgame.
The Blue Raiders and Owls completed 5.2 innings of play and Middle Tennessee leads 3-0. Middle Tennessee is in the field and will tentatively face Rice leadoff hitter Jacob Devanney with the bases empty and a fresh count when play resumes on Saturday.
So far in the ballgame, Eston Snider's speed netted the Blue Raiders their first run of the night after he legged out a grounder to Rice shortstop Ben Royo, and Royo's throw sailed into the MTSU dugout to put Snider in scoring positon to start the inning. Snider eventually came in to score after an RBI groundout by Brett Coker to make it 1-0 after one.
After three straight innings of zeroes, Middle Tennessee left fielder Jackson Galloway welcomed Rice pitcher Blake Brogdon into the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth inning by smoking his first pitch, a fastball, over the wall in left for a line-drive solo home run to make it 2-0 MTSU.
Eston Snider legged out another infield hit to score Luke Vinson from third with two outs to plate another Blue Raider run to bring us to a 3-0 score at the end of the fifth just prior to going into a lightning delay at 7:17 p.m.
To that point of the night, freshman hurler Patrick Johnson was in the midst of logging his third quality start in his last four starts for Middle Tennessee. With two outs in the fifth, he'd allowed just one hit and no runs with two strikeouts.
