Blue Raider Rally Falls Short Sunday Against LA Tech
4/30/2023 4:53:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Baseball had the go-ahead runners on base in the bottom of the ninth against the LA Tech Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
However, the Blue Raiders ran out of outs and stranded the runners aboard to fall 3-1 in the series' rubber game.
MTSU is now 22-21 overall and 11-10 in Conference USA.
Down 3-0 in the sixth inning, the Raiders got on the board when Eston Snider grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, but not before Jeremiah Boyd scored.
RHP James Sells kept the home team in the game with his six inning, six strikeout outing. The righty from Winchester, Tenn. allowed just six baserunners Sunday.
Kota Sato took the loss, allowing a pair of unearned runs in the first inning before allowing another run in the third. He went 2.1 frames in his start. Daniel Dewey faced a trio of batters in the third inning before Ollie Akens came out of the bullpen to finish the frame.
The Skipper Speaks
"It was a competitive series. Two very different games in the first and second game. And today, we knew it was going to be a fight. Whether it was going to be low-scoring or high-scoring, the wind was blowing in and was going to be a factor. We put ourselves in position by getting the leadoff guy on several times today. There was a slim margin for error today. Sells gave us a good effort out of the bullpen to give us a chance to cash in. Some of the balls we hit turned into double plays. If two of those find a hole, the game is a different story.
"The message is we have to keep doing what we're doing. We're not going to take this as losing any kind of momentum. We're continuing to build. It's a tough league and there are some tough teams," said head coach Jerry Meyers.
By the Numbers
6.0: Sells' six frames represents the second-longest he's gone this season.
3-3: LF Jackson Galloway was 3-3 with a walk, reaching base in each plate appearance Sunday.
6-9: Six of MTSU's nine leadoff men reached base.
4: However, the Blue Raiders grounded into four double plays.
Blue Raider Notes
Luke Vinson batted first in the order Sunday for the first time in 2023. He is the third player to lead off this year, joining Snider and JT Mabry.
Next Up
MTSU is on the road for its next five games, starting with a three-game C-USA series next weekend at Dallas Baptist. The Blue Raiders are next at home Friday, May 12 against UAB. First pitch for that game is set for 6:00 p.m.
