MTSU honors six seniors during Senior Day festivities
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee Baseball's bats were kept in check on Sunday at Reese Smith Jr. Field, as MTSU dropped the final game of their final home series, 6-2, to UAB.
The Blue Raiders (25-24, 14-13 C-USA) only recorded a hit in three of their innings at bat, going three-up-three down five separate times against the Blazers (16-34, 7-20 C-USA). DJ Wright's double into the right-center field gap in the bottom of the second was MTSU's only offense on the afternoon, plating both Jeremiah Boyd and Gabe Jennings. UAB starter Carson Myers scattered four hits across eight innings of work to keep the Blue Raiders in check.
Jalen Wirtz and Kota Sato were both solid out of the bullpen for MTSU, combining for five innings of scoreless relief. Sato struck out six Blazers in just 2.1 innings of work, while Wirtz allowed no hits on the afternoon. Starter Bryant Beranek took the loss after allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings.
By the Numbers
2.2: Scoreless innings pitched by Jalen Wirtz. It's tied for his longest scoreless outing of the season with his most recent outing on May 5 against Dallas Baptist. The sophomore also allowed no hits out of the bullpen on Sunday.
6: Strikeouts for Kota Sato, tying his season high for an appearance out of the bullpen. Sato also struck out six batters against Lipscomb on April 19.
Blue Raider Notes
The Blue Raiders honored players Gino Avros, Jeremiah Boyd, Brett Coker, JT Mabry and DJ Wright as well as manager Noah Baughman prior to the start of Sunday's game during Senior Day festivities.
MTSU finished 17-12 on the year in Murfreesboro.
The Skipper Speaks
"Carson Myers was really good. That's where you start. He was really good last week as well, we saw it on tape. He's a guy on a roll and we weren't able to get to him or make him work too hard. When we did get some opportunities, we left some out there on the table. We didn't come up productive in a couple of key spots that could've made it a very interesting game down the stretch.
"(The senior class) will always be a special group to me. We went 'Ok, this is how we're going to do things" back in September when our staff took over and they go 'Ok, we're going to try to everything we can to as productive as we can with this club, but a lot of it's going to be what the coaches say, but it's going to be more so what JT and Coker and Gino and DJ and Jeremiah (said).' I really appreciate the effort that they gave all year long in terms of maximizing what we can do up this point. The leadership has been huge."
