Blue Raiders Fall in Series Rubber Matchup at Dallas Baptist
5/7/2023 4:14:00 PM | Baseball
Down 6-2 with two outs in the fourth inning, the Blue Raiders strung together consecutive two-run hits to tie the contest. JT Mabry doubled on an 0-2 count before Brett Coker singled to center field on the first pitch of an at bat.
However, the home team was able to counterpunch in the ensuing frames, with a run in the bottom of the fourth before hanging a five-spot in the fifth.
The Blue Raiders (23-23, 12-12 Conference USA) are back at .500 overall and in C-USA play with the defeat.
For the third time this series, the Blue Raiders had a run in the top of the first. Briggs Rutter singled JT Mabry in from second base.
The Patriots took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first before the Blue Raiders got back within one on a Jeremiah Boyd sacrifice fly.
DBU had a trio of solo home runs in the third to take a four-run lead, a lead that was temporarily erased with MTSU's four-run fourth.
Dallas Baptist added three runs in the eighth to cap the afternoon.
Starting pitcher Ollie Akens went 2.2 IP, with fellow RHP Eriq Swan taking the decision in his two-frame outing out the bullpen.
The Skipper Speaks
"Today was another indication of not letting up. We got down against one of the best teams in the country, and we could have let it be all said and done. We scrapped back and had some good at bats against one of their better relievers and tied the ballgame. But there is not consolation prize for not finishing the last four innings a little bit better," said head coach Jerry Meyers.
"We fought hard, we didn't give in at all, and those things are positive but also expected."
By the Numbers
43: MTSU had 43 total hits across its trio of games in the Lone Star State.
4: Four Blue Raiders had multi-hit afternoons, led by Mabry (3-5). Coker and Luke Vinson each went 2-5 while Wright was 2-4.
Blue Raider Notes
With 13 base knocks Sunday, the Raiders had at least 10 hits for the fifth time in six games.
Boyd extended his on-base streak to 11 games.
