LYNCHBURG, Va. –The Middle Tennessee women's soccer team (7-9-0, 4-4-0 CUSA) fell in a 2-1 result to the Liberty Flames (13-1-4, 5-1-2 CUSA) in the final road match of the 2024 campaign today in Lynchburg, Va.
Middle Tennessee remains in control of the fifth seed in the Conference USA table with just one match reaming against Louisiana Tech on Nov. 1 in Murfreesboro, prior to the start of the conference tournament on Nov. 4 in Miami, Fla.
The Blue Raiders suffered a similar fate in the loss today 2-1 loss against Liberty as they did in last week's matchup against Sam Houston. The Flames opening their scoring account for the afternoon with a goal just outside of the first five minutes from Halle Engle, her third of the year.
As has been the case many times this season, leading scorer Manon Lebargy broke through the Liberty defense for the Middle Tennessee's equalizer in the 18th minute, coming off an incredible over the top through ball from Hannah Murphy.
Both sides would see a 1-1 scoreline into the halftime break.
The second half would see multiple scoring opportunities on both ends of the pitch, but with the help of stellar goalkeeper play from MTSU's Demi Gronauer and Liberty's Grace Workman, who subbed in for Peyton Huber at the half, the score remained level at one.
As the match entered the final stretch, the Flames found a way to break through the Blue Raider defense, breaking the deadlock and taking a 2-1 lead in the 80th minute after Engle's second goal of the afternoon.
Middle Tennessee would suffer their second consecutive defeat in Lynchburg, dropping the team's overall record to 7-9 and the conference record to 4-4.
By the Numbers
The Blue Raiders scored one goal on an efficient 10 shots and eight on frame. Lebargy was the goalscorer for the blue and white, her team-high 11th of the season, placing her firmly in second among the conference's top scorers.
