SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Despite the dreary conditions, the Middle Tennessee women's golf program got off to a great start at the Cardinal Cup. The team closed out the first round shooting 294 (+6), placing second after 18 holes and notching eight birdies at the University of Louisville Golf Club.
Leading the Blue Raiders once again is senior Kendall Maynard, who shot the low round for the squad (71). The senior played a clean round throughout, finishing T3 after the opening round. Maynard carded 17-straight pars before her first birdie of the day at the final hole, earning the most par-or-low holes out of all 84 players.
Lanie Campbell earned the most birdies of the MT players throughout the first round, tallying two on the front nine and one on the back. The junior and Ella Manley both finished at 73 (+1) to come in at T11. Manley turned in two birdies, one on each nine, finishing the back nine at par.
After a difficult back nine, Abbie Lee turned her performance around on the front nine to finish T37. Coming in, the senior had shot +4 and bogeyed holes one and two. After the second hole, the Kentucky native kicked it into gear and shot the remaining holes at par before earning her first birdie of the round at the final hole and turning in a 77 (+5).
Nicole Johnson struggled through the rain, shooting an 80 (+8) to finish T64 with one birdie on hole five.
