Blue Raiders Fall to Mississippi State, 69–47

DESTIN, Fla. — Middle Tennessee (3-4) battled early but couldn't keep pace with a hot-shooting Mississippi State (5-1), falling 69-47 on Tuesday afternoon at Raider Arena.
The Blue Raiders opened the game trading baskets and briefly held a 4-2 lead, but MSU responded with a 9-0 run to take control. Turnovers and cold perimeter shooting hurt MTSU early, as Mississippi State closed the first quarter ahead 18-8.
A strong start to the second quarter gave the Blue Raiders life. Senior Alayna Contreras knocked down a 3-pointer, and freshman Macie Phifer added another as part of a 6-0 burst that cut the deficit to four. Mississippi State answered with a dominant 15-2 run to close the half, extending its lead to 35-19.
MTSU put together its best offensive stretch in the third quarter, scoring 16 points and trimming the deficit to 16 heading into the fourth. But MSU's interior scoring and transition play proved too much down the stretch.
Phifer led Middle Tennessee with a career-high 13 points and nine rebounds, continuing her strong production in the paint. Savannah Davis added 12 points, while Contreras finished with nine.
Coach's Comments
"I thought Macie and Blair battled all day long, but we did a poor job shooting free throws. That's at least four or five more points. We got back in the game running some of our quicks. We hit a three and cut it to eight, but instead they go down and get a runout, and then we had two or three more mistakes."
By the Numbers
8: Middle Tennessee opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run.
13: Phifer set a career high with 13 points.
18: The Blue Raiders finished with 18 points in the paint and 18 defensive rebounds.
